Glen Holmes Byars, 94, died peacefully on Thursday, January 15,2009, at Samaritan Hospital. He was born on April 26, 1914, to John Holmes and Ollie Ann (Owens) Byars in Hillsboro, Texas.
At the age of 15 he left the home and entered manhood, working in the Texas oil fields to support his family.
On Aug. 2, 1935, he married Mary
Letitia Martin in Texas. To this union William Glen and Monya Ann were born.
Glen was a fine Christian man. He loved God, his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a long time elder in Kearney.
Glen was preceded in death by his wife, daughter-in-law, one brother, and three sisters.
He is survived by his children and their spouses: William and Suzanne Byars of Lubbock, Texas; and Dan and Trudy Hirschfeld of Kearney, Nebraska; his grandchildren and their spouses: Michelle "Maggie" and Herman Porter of Kiawah Island, S.C.; David and Tami Hirschfeld of Choteau, MT; Letitia and David Spencer of Gibbon, Nebraska; Tim and
Jonna Byars of Lubbock, TX; Ben and Christie Hirschfeld of Kearney, NE; and Matt and Heather Byars of Lubbock, TX and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at 10:00 AM at the Kearney Church of Christ. He will
be buried alongside his wife in Meeker, Oklahoma.
Following Glen's wishes, the family requests memorials to Westview Boys Home in Hollis, Oklahoma or The House of Compassion in Rochester, MN.
