Thomas "Tom" Richard Gilbert was the son of Richard Mosley Gilbert, Jr. and Sarah Daisy Groh.

Thomas Richard Gilbert married Nellie Mae Green 02 SEP 1942 in Drumright, Creek County, Oklahoma.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 2, 2000 for Thomas "Tom" Richard Gilbert, 86, of Wagoner. Services were at First United Methodist Church in Wagoner. Burial took place in Pioneer Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Shipman Funeral Home and Crematory of Wagoner.

Gilbert was born December 1, 1913 in Magazine, Arkansas and died Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at Tulsa Regional Medical Center. He first came to Wagoner County on December 1, 1929, arriving on horseback from Magazine, Arkansas. He accompanied his father, Richard Mosley Gilbert, who drove the team and wagon loaded with the goods they would need for the family's new home at Yonkers, on the east side of Grand River. He attended Elm Grove School at Yonkers, where he completed the eighth grade.

He began his career in the cattle business at age 17, when his father gave him his first cow. He and his wife, Nell, were married September 2, 1942 at Drumright, Oklahoma and together they built their cattle herd into a ranching operation that at one time had more than 500 head. In 1944, they moved north of Wagoner, where they farmed corn and cotton and ran cattle. He began his own trucking business in 1947 and hauled cattle, tractors and grain from coast to coast. He also sold Moorman's mineral for a period, but never left the cattle business until his retirement last May. He took a great deal of pride in the herd quality Limousin cattle he had established over the years.

He also took pride in being a supporter of the Wagoner and Muskogee junior livestock shows. He was a member of the Oklahoma Cattleman's Association, where he served on several committees. He was also a member of the Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association, the American National Cattlemans Association, the Oklahoma Limousin Breeders Association and Green Country Limousin Association. He and Nell were honored with the Wagoner County Bankers Award from the Soil Conservation Service and were named the 1964 Wagoner County Farm Family of the Year at the Muskogee State Fair.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Sam Gilbert; a sister, Cleo Epps; and a daughter, Sarah Gilbert.

The family prefers memorials to the Wagoner County Cattleman's Association Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 487, Coweta, Oklahoma 74429, or to the Tom Gilbert Memorial Fund, Wagoner Junior Livestock Show, in care of David Baker, 300 Bulldog Circle, Wagoner, Oklahoma 74467.
