French Sculptor, Legion of Honor - Denys Pierre Puech:

Son of Jean Puech and Rose Guilbert-Puech. born "Denys Pierre Puech", on December 3, 1854 in the hamlet of "Gavernac", close to the town of "Bozouls" in the French department of Averyon (Auvergne). He had 3 brothers. Their mother was one who gave them the taste for studies and perseverance. Brother, Louis Puech was to become an appointed lawyer, and then a French government Minister (Ministre des Travaux Public). Germain Puech, a doctor. Brother, Henri Puech took up the family farm and lands. Denys was to be the artist. In 1870 he entered into apprenticeship as artisan, working marble stone in Rodez. In 1872, he emigrated to Paris, where after two years of preparation, he followed evening courses at the School of Fine Art. In 1881 and 1883, he twice received second prize awards for sculpture in Rome, Italy - and obtained a first prize in 1884. In 1885, be became the distinguished Director of the School of Art at the World-famous Medicis Villa, in Rome. In 1892, he obtained a number of official orders to create: busts, monuments, bas-reliefs, etc. He prepared (in 1903) his project to build a museum in Rodez (Musee Denys Puech), which was inaugurated seven years later. In 1908, he was elected to the French "Legion d'Honneur" and married Princess Anina Gagarin Stourdza (Russian-Ukranian). Here's a short list of people he knew or met (and for whom he sculpted, busts): King Edward VII of England, Prince Albert I of Monaco, Nicolas Tsar of Russia, Benito Mussolini, Randolph Hearst, a French President, various French politicians, dignitaries and artists of note, e.g. Victor Hugo, Leon Bonnat, Francis Garnier, Leconte de Lisle, Eugene Viala (and many others). More than 573 works in marble and bronze are attributed to Denys, including one on display in the "Jardin du Luxembourg" in the heart of Paris, others at the "Museum of Orsay" Paris, France. Two statues at the "Hearst Castle" in San Simeon, California (Les Lys & Les Roses). One in New Orleans (see photo, at right) - to cite just a few that are accessible to the Public.

Issu d'une famille d'agriculteurs, il débute comme apprenti chez l'artisan marbrier François Mahoux à Rodez. En 1872, après deux ans de formation, il poursuit son apprentissage à Paris chez François Jouffroy puis chez Alexandre Falguière et Henri Chapu, tout en suivant des cours du soir aux Beaux-Arts. En 1881, il obtient son premier succès avec le 2e 'Grand Prix de Rome' pour "Tyrtée chantant les Messéniennes". En 1883, il enregistre un nouveau succès avec le 2e 'Grand Prix de Rome' pour "Diagoras mourant de joie en apprenant le triomphe de ses deux enfants vainqueurs aux Jeux Olympiques". En 1884, il est enfin lauréat du 'Grand Prix de Rome' pour "Mezence blessé". Dès lors, il réalise de nombreuses commandes officielles au long de la Troisième République. Il sculpte, entre autres, les bustes de Jules Ferry (1895), Sainte-Beuve (1898), Émile Loubet (1901) et Mussolini (1925). En tout, 573 œuvres sont recensées. Il est élu membre de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts en 1905. Il est nommé Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur le 17 janvier 1908. Il occupe le poste de Directeur de la Villa Médicis de 1921 à 1933. Il épouse le 13 mai 1908 la princesse Anina Gagarine Stourdza (1er juin 1865 - 14 avril 1918), artiste-peintre. Il est le frère de Louis Puech, député de la Seine de 1898 à 1932, ministre des travaux publics du 3 novembre 1910 au 27 février 1911. Il fonde à Rodez en 1903 un musée des Beaux-Arts. Le bâtiment, inauguré en 1910, est conçu en concertation avec l'architecte Boyer pour mettre en valeur ses sculptures.
