Neil E. Gaustad, 85, of Houston, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at the Caledonia Care and Rehab Center in Caledonia.

He was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Yucatan Township, Minn., to P. Oliver and Clara (Ness) Gaustad. He was raised in Yucatan where he attended country school. He worked on his parent's farm for a few years.

On Nov. 7, 1946, he was united in marriage with Ruth Nelson in Houston. After their marriage, he worked Ruth's parent's farm for several years.

Gaustad drove school bus, worked for Thern Company in Winona and for Caledonia Haulers.

He loved to tinker with his tractors, vehicles, and with making keys and locksmith work. Above all else he loved his family. He was a great role model to his granddaughters who loved him so much.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Barbara Burroughs of Houston; three granddaughters, Kari Deters, Amber Eide and Brooke Benson; four great-granddaughters, Emma, Chealsy, Hilary and Rachel; two sisters, Irene Tweito of Waukon, Iowa, and Olive Ann (Jim) Cauthens of San Diego, Calif.; four sisters-in-law, Mildred Gaustad of Houston, Eileen Krage of Houston, Edith Nelson of Winona and Beulah Gaustad of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Sidney, Cyrus and Clifton; and one sister, Alida Laschenski.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
