Since Eli survived his wife by almost 20 years, it is assumed that her tombstone was erected by him - with surname spelled as "Rodgers". AND when Eli died, his tombstone was also inscribed with surname spelled as "Rodgers." However, it appears that later descendants adopted the spelling of their surname as "Rogers". Census data and marriage records for this family in Murray Co, GA reflect both spellings.

Retaining the spelling of "Rodgers" as inscribed on the tombstones of Eli & his wife is a reminder to future generations that current spellings of names (both given names and surnames) have evolved over centuries ... and we should NOT attempt to re-write history.
