Paul M. Affeldt, the son of the Rev. Paul J. and Mrs. Alma L. Affeldt, was born in Fairmont, Minn., and called to his eternal home early Wednesday morning, Oct. 31, at St. Cloud Hospital. He attended elementary school in Trimont, Minn., and graduated with the class of 1948 from the Brainerd High School. He joined the U.S. Army on his 18th birthday, serving with the occupational forces in Japan and later as a combat medic in Korea. Upon returning stateside, Sgt. Affeldt served at Fort Leonardwood, Mo., from where he received an honorary discharge in June 1952.
Paul and his wife, Norine, met in St. Louis, Mo., and were married at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sauk Rapids, Minn., on Oct. 11, 1952. In 1959 they made their permanent home in Brainerd, where they raised their four children. He served the congregation of Zion Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher and also an elder for 30-plus years. Paul retired from his position as a full-time and volunteer firefighter/engineer from the Brainerd Fire Department in December 1991.
Paul is survived by his wife and four children, Denise (Greg), Paul (Janine), David J. (Charlotte), Dwight (Patti); his grandchildren, Nichole Kaiser, Jeremy Affeldt, Brandon Greg, Brittny-Anne and Brandon Thomas Boetcher, Paul Allen, Michael D. Affeldt and Jared, Maria and Hannah Ingersol; also great-grandchildren, Malachi, Josiah and Selah Dawn Kaiser and Walker D. Affeldt; his sister, Elayne M. Pijahn, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins throughout the United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two grandchildren, Jaymie Leigh and Chase Robert Boetcher.
Services will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Pastor Mark Kleckner officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday. Military rites will be provided by the VFW Post No. 1647 of Brainerd. Interment will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church in Brainerd.
Arrangements are with the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home.

Fire hall fixture Paul Affeldt dies

Paul Affeldt, a longtime member of the Brainerd Fire Department, died Wednesday at the St. Cloud Hospital.
He was 76.
Affeldt, a Brainerd resident, served as a full-time fire equipment operator with the Brainerd Fire Department for 21 years, starting in 1969 and retiring in 1990, according to city records. He also was a volunteer firefighter, retiring from this position in January 1991. Affeldt also served as acting fire chief for three months in 1982.
Although Affeldt was retired for many years, he wasn't a stranger at the fire hall. He would come in to have coffee with the retired firefighters who meet every Monday morning. Brainerd Fire Chief Fred Underhill said he last spoke to Affeldt on Monday morning when he was in having coffee with other retirees.
"Paul was one of those quiet guys that was always there," said Underhill. "He was very devoted to the department. He was one of the quiet ones, always in the background, always paying attention to what was going on and always supporting the department even after he retired."
Former Brainerd Fire Department engineer Paul Affeldt, who died Wednesday, loved to regale his friends with stories of his grandson, Jeremy Affeldt, who pitched last week for the Colorado Rockies in the World Series. A proud grandfather, Affeldt loved to share stories about the family's major league star.
"We're going to miss him a lot," said Deb Doucette, a Brainerd Fire daytime dispatcher and administrative assistant. "He had a quiet demeanor and a wit that always kept us laughing. He was just a likable guy."
Jeremy Affeldt, Paul Affeldt's grandson, is a left-handed reliever for the Colorado Rockies and pitched in the World Series last week. He made his major league debut in 2002 with the Kansas City Royals and was traded by the Royals to the Rockies in 2006.
Doucette said that whenever his grandson was traded, Paul Affeldt would come in wearing that team's baseball cap. Whenever Jeremy changed teams, Paul changed baseball caps.
"He'd say, 'Deb, here's where our loyalty is now,'" Doucette said with a laugh of Affeldt.
Doucette said she watched Jeremy pitch a perfect inning during the last game of the World Series last week and couldn't wait to talk to Affeldt about it. Unfortunately, she said she didn't get that chance.
"He held a special place in my heart," said Doucette. "We used to trade. He knew I liked to collect small blue bottles. I'd bake him homemade baked goods and we'd trade for blue glass bottles. He'd say, 'What's this worth? A couple dozen cookies? A pie?' He was quite a character."
"It was really fun to work with him," said Jerry Thompson, also a former Brainerd firefighter and friend of Affeldt. "I never saw him get riled up over too much. He took life as it came. He was just a nice guy to be around. He was one of my good friends."
Thompson said Affeldt, a Korean War veteran, served as acting fire chief when the fire department moved into the new fire hall.
In his retirement letter to then fire chief Ron Johnson back in 1990, Affeldt told Johnson that as they've previously discussed, "there is a time for all good things to come to an end. And it appears my time has arrived."
Funeral arrangements for Affeldt are pending with the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd.
