Pioneer Anthony Hits Long Trail

Veteran of Civil War and Pathfinder of West Answers Final Summons

William Anthony, a pioneer of the west for the past 43 years, died in Boise
last week, after an active life, full of hardships of the early trail blazers.

Mr. Anthony, who was born in Iowa, in 1833, was proud of the fact that he was
a member of Company B Seventh regiment of volunteers, Iowa cavalry. After
seeing hard fighting through the Civil war he crossed the plains in 1877
reaching Boise at the time of the Bannock Indian war, in fact his introduction
to this section was when he helped to hang three Indians.

Shoots Dead Indians

One of his comrades during this adventure is still living at the Idaho
Soldier’s home. Mr. Anthony used to tell that this companion shot each of the
Indians after they had been hung. When asked why he killed a “dead Indian” he
replied “ he knew the Indians weren’t dead, for all three of them were looking
at me.”

From the time Mr. Anthony reached Boise 43 years ago, he never left this
section, except when he freighted from Silver City and Hailey to Boise, in the
days when oxen were used. He was perfectly contented to remain in this section
and seemed to have no desire to leave Idaho.

For the past 20 years Mr. Anthony has remained quietly at home on account of
ill health. He is survived by two children, William J. Anthony of Pocatello
and Mrs. M.E. Anderson of Meridian, 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren
and two great, great grandchildren.
