Robert G. Bourassa, 66, Rumford
All-American Masters swimmer

Robert G. Bourassa, 66, of Rumford, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007.

He was the beloved husband of Kathleen V. (Wallor) Bourassa for 44 years. Born in Central Falls, a son of the late George E. and Doris R. (Fortier) Bourassa, he lived in Rumford since 1965.

Mr. Bourassa served in the US Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a sales representative for Ulbrich Stainless Steel and Special Metals, New Haven, CT. for 25 years until retiring in 2005. He was a 1978 graduate of Providence College. Swimming became a lifetime sport for Mr. Bourassa. He was a Rhode Island, New England and Junior Olympic champion during his teenage years. As a Masters swimmer he set several New England records and achieved All-American Masters status in 1994. From 1988 until 2004 he was ranked among the top 10 world and national swimmers. He was a member of the New England Masters Swim Club and was inducted into the Rhode Island Aquatic Hall of Fame in 1996.

He will be remembered among his swimming peers as one of the most respected and knowledgeable competitors in Masters swimming who led his teams to victory and also loved coaching his granddaughters. He was a novice golfer who scored a hole-in-one. He was also a member of the Pawtucket Boys Club.

Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Judith C. (Mark D.) Laliberte of Rumford and Rachel R. (Stephen C.) Attar of Rehoboth; one brother, Norman Bourassa of Warwick; one sister, Janet L. Bourassa of Cumberland; three grandchildren, Alexina, Kathryn and Emma Laliberte and several nieces and nephews. His funeral with Military Honors was held Dec. 5 from the William W. Tripp Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret Church. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery. Gifts in his memory to Home & Hospice Care of RI, 169 George St., Pawtucket, RI 02860 would be appreciated.
