Burial entry in the sexton's ledger book shows: J. D. IRVIN, born in Columbus, Ga., died aged 31 years at his residence (address 1430 First Avenue) of a gunshot wound, and was buried 30 DEC 1903 in the Old Cemetery section. The sexton was Jesse Alexander BEARD.
Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book (edited by Lea Dowd et al.), Volume 3, p. 22, includes the following newspaper item, transcribed from the Columbus (GA) Daily Enquirer-Sun newspaper for 27 DEC 1903: "John Thomas PATRICK [possibly this man], a painter [aged] about 30 years, shot John D. IRVIN, another well known young man, probably fatally, in the front part of the saloon of John W. ODOM, at 6:30 last night. IRVIN is shot through and through and there is thought to be no chance for his recovery. PATRICK made his escape and is thought to be in Alabama. John D. IRVIN is the son of John Y. IRVIN, a well known Bailiff. He is 31 years of age and has spent all his life in Columbus. His wife is the former Miss ALLEN. He has no children. Messrs. William Frank [IRVIN]. Charles [IRVIN], Mirabeau [IRVIN], and Vernon IRVIN are big brothers. His sisters are Mrs. A. C. HARDY,. Mrs. C. W. GILBERT, Mrs. F. H. ABBOTT and Miss Hazel IRVIN, all of this city. Mrs. J. B. McCARTER [?] of Unity, GA and Mrs. M. M. MARTIN of Montgomery."
