The oldest son, Norman, moved the family to Ashton, Idaho in 1954. Norman and Billy began working at the Warm River Sawmill - they loved the smell of cut logs and the beauty of the streams that floated the logs. His Mother married William Forest Williams. She died in 1964 of breast cancer.
The boys were musically talented and loved entertaining with their guitars and singing. They were invited to a Butikofer family reunion and Billy met Lois Butikofer there. They fell in love and were married in the Coltman LDS Church 2 May 1968. They lived in Ashton for 8 years and moved to Coltman in 1976 where Billy went into business for himself as a trucker. He contracted with the forest serve and was actively engaged in trucking and logging at the time of his illness eleven months before his death.
He is survived by his wife Lois and two children, Jonita three and a half and Kyle two and a half; his brothers Norman Hubert and Robert Carl Bates.
