Aaron was the son of John Grey Shacklett and Susannah Chalfin.

Aaron C. Shacklett married Sophronia Elizabeth Miller on April 10, 1856 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Sophronia was the daughter of John Miller and his first wife of Breckinridege County, Kentucky.

Aaron and Sophronia had four children; Susa Ella Shacklett, born 1858, Emma Shacklett, born 1860, McClellan Shacklett, born 1862, and Alfred Allen Shacklett, born 1864.

Aaron Shacklett enlisted in the Union Army on September 12, 1861 and achieved the rank of Major in the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry. He resigned April 13, 1863 after an illness from which he never recovered and died in Breckinridge County. Aaron left a widow and four children.

Sophronia married Mark Wedding in Cloverport, Kentucky in 1876. Following his death in 1894, Sophronia moved to San Antonio to live near their son McClellan. Sophronia Wedding died February 19, 1918 and was buried the following day in the City Cemetery in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.
