Former Head of Medical Academy Dies

Dr. Ellis S. Montgomery Succumbs to Long Illness, Was 79.

Nearly half a century of medical service in Pittsburgh was brought to a close yesterday with the death of Dr. Ellis S. Montgomery, 79, of 109 Stratford avenue, formerly surgeon for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and one of the oldest members of the Pittsburgh Academy of Medicine.

Funeral services for Dr. Montgomery, who died after a long illness at Passavant Hospital, of whose staff he was a member, will be held tomorrow at the T. B. Moreland Funeral Home, 401 North Highland avenue. Burial will be private in Homewood Cemetery.

Came to City in 1888

Born on a farm near Kittanning, Pa., on January 3, 1860 [sic], Dr. Montgomery came to Pittsburgh in 1888 to attend the Western Pennsylvania Medical College. Upon graduating with honors in 1890 he was appointed to the faculty of the school and as physician to the mental and nervous department of the Pittsburgh Free Dispensary.

Late he held several staff positions in medical institutions here, and became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons as well as a member of numerous medical organizations.

President of Academy

In 1907 Dr. Montgomery was elected president of the Pittsburgh Academy of Medicine.

He was one of the organizers and the first president, in 1909, of the Stanton Heights Golf Club, and belonged to Christ Methodist Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh.

From his marriage with the late Anna Boggs, who died in 1937, Dr. Montgomery had four children, three of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Frank Campbell, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Jowell Conner, Eugene, Or., and Charles P. Montgomery [sic], Ford City, Pa. Also surviving are two sisters: Mrs David Giarth and Mrs. William Heilman, both of Ford City.
