Wayne Vance Gygi was the oldest of six children born to Orson H. And Zina Vance Gygi on March 4, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up in East Mill Creek, attended school in the Granite School District, graduated from Granite High School, and attended the University of Utah.
He then served a two and a half year LDS Mission to Uruguay which ended in 1953. Following his mission, Wayne was drafted into the Korean War on May 4, 1953 where he served in the army stationed in Germany and was released from active military service and transferred to the Army Reserve on September 4, 1953.
After his services, he graduated from Brigham Young University with a Business Degree and worked at the Orson H. Gygi Company Inc. and was later appointed President of the family business. On November 23, 1955, he married Kaye Holmstead in the Salt Lake Temple.
During his life, Wayne was dedicated to hard work and service. Serving in the family business, he provided for his family and in turn taught his own children the ethics of working. Throughout his life he served in Priesthood leadership positions, including a mission with his wife in the Orem, Utah North Stake and worked in the Mount Timpanogos Temple. In his later years, he was known to the school kids of Geneva Elementary as "Mr. Smiley" where he worked for 10 years as a crossing guard. He also regularly attended the Orem Recreation Center to practice his hook-shot on the basketball court.
He will forever be remembered for his dedication to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and his love of singing.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude toward the personnel of the Orchard Park Care Center in Orem, as well as the doctors and nurses of the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo for their love and vigilant care.
This beloved family member and friend passed away on February 13, 2009 encircled by family and we hope that Heaven can use an extra crossing guard. Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Kaye, four children, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in the Timpanogos Park 6th Ward Chapel at 11:00 a.m.. A viewing will be held prior to the services from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. The building is located at 955 North 300 East in Orem.
