Melvin Leroy Sauer, 67 of Gering, died Thursday, January 18, 2007 at his home. Mel was born July 11, 1939 in Bayard, Nebraska, and attended the School for the Visually Impaired in Nebraska City from 1947 - 1956. He then attended the Bayard High School where he graduated with the class of 1958. Mel's fascination with radio began at an early age after receiving a radio from his grandmother. From that point on, radio was his life. He began his radio career in 1960 at KIMB, Kimball, Ne. He worked at KOLT in Scottsbluff from 1961 - 1985, spent time at KOBH in Hot Springs, S. D.; KCSR, Chadron, KOAQ, Scottsbluff; and from 1989 - 2006 at KPNY in Scottsbluff. Sports and weather were his areas of expertise. As he was sight-impaired (blind), he was one of the first to receive a Braille teletype printer that was used in electronic media. He received many awards of recognition to his contribution to the community and was inducted into the Nebraska Broadcasting Assocation's Hall of Fame in 1995. He often stated that he didn't need to be awarded for doing a job he loved. Mel's final sign off always was - - - "It's been a Sauer Production." While working with Bob Aue, farm news director at KOLT, it was " an Aue-full Sauer Production"

He was a member of the Kiwanis and Lions Club, serving as president. He received awards of recognition for his contribution to the community such as being awarded as a member of the Nebraska Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Until his death, he remained an avid fan of the Denver Broncos, men and women's Cougar and Cornhusker teams and all the valley sports teams.
Mel is survived by his daughters Melanie (Robert) Evans of Depew, NY, Monica Buchholz of Lancaster, NY; son, Michael of Derby, NY; grandson, Tyler Holcomb of Lancaster, NY; brothers Clarence (Jeri) of Yutan, NE, Lemoyne (Patty) Bayard, Robert (Linda) of Maple Heights, OH; sisters Cheryl (Don) Parsons of Ft Calhoun, NE, Marilyn (Deanie) Axt and Nancy (LeRoy) Eichthaler all of Bridgeport., numerous nieces and nephews and special friend Mary St. Onge of Scottsbluff.
