Born in South Carolina to John and Margaret (Givens) Dowdle, he came to the Caledonia region in the early 1820’s. He was married to Jane A. Murphy, daughter of Robert and Rachel Rainey Murphy. In Lowndes County, he operated an early mill on the Buttahatchie with his father-in-law, Robert Murphy, and brother-in-law, William G. Wright. Represented in the area today by the Duncan family of Lowndes County. The 1850 census shows Andrew Dowdle (51 SC), Jane A. (44 SC), Anderson A. (21 MS), Joseph (19 MS), Robert (17 MS), Rachel (15 MS), Mary (12 MS), Esther (10 MS), Elizabeth (7 MS), Isabella (4 MS) and Julia (1 MS). Andrew is given as a ginwright by profession. The 1860 census shows Andrew Dowdle (62 SC), Adoline (63 SC), Robert (26 MS), Mary (21 MS), Esther (19 MS), Elizabeth (17 MS), Isabella (13 MS), and Julia (12 MS).
