The November 1850 US Census of Subdivision 45, Jackson Co., GA enumerated the household of 33 Y/O Stephen Reed Hood and his 29 Y/O wife, Jane (Sewell) Hood. He was a farmer with 170 acres of land valued at $500.00 cash. Residing in the household were their children: 8 Y/O Angeline Hood; 6 Y/O John S. Hood; 3 Y/O William H. Hood and 8 months old James H. Hood.

Angeline migrated from Jackson Co., GA to Cherokee Co., AL with her family via covered wagon soon after November 1855 when she was 13 years old. She related many years later the great difficulties they had crossing the rivers, camping and their struggles through the dense forests. In 1861, when the Civil War started, she was 18 years old and was engaged to 21 year old Warren R D Huff, a member of her father's, Steven Reed Hood, Lebanon Advent Church congregation. Huff became a Lieutenant in Captain Stephen Reed Hood's Company "D" of the 22nd Alabama Infantry Regiment in 1861. There are many extant letters between Angeline and Warren. The letters express their deep love, the deprivations of the war and the horrors of the battles and disease amongst the troops. Huff participated in many battles and was killed in action at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863 (See Find A Grave Memorial# 90548477 for more info on Lieut Warren R D Huff).

The 1860 US Census of Kings Hill, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of 42 Y/O Stephen Reed Hood, a Baptist minister and farmer, and his 39 Y/O wife, Jane (Sewell) Hood. His estate was valued at $3000.00. Also living in the household were their children: 17 Y/O Angeline Hood, born in GA; 15 Y/O John S. Hood, born in GA; 13 Y/O William H. Hood, born in GA; 11 Y/O James H. Hood, born in GA; 9 Y/O Mary Hood, born in GA, 7 Y/O Simeon Hood, born in GA; 5 Y/O daughter, Huldah Hood, born in GA; 3 Y/O George Hood, born in Alabama, and 6 months old Susan Hood, born in Alabama.

The 1870 US Census of Attalla, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 51 Y/O Stephen Reed Hood, a gospel minister and farmer, and his 48 Y/O wife, Jane (Sewell) Hood. His post-war estate was valued at $2000.00 (quite a economic recovery). Also living in the household were their children: 28 Y/O Angeline Hood; 20 old James H. Hood; 18 Y/O Mary Hood, 17 Y/O Simeon Hood; 14 Y/O Huldah Hood; 13 Y/O George Hood; 10 Y/O Susan Hood; 7 Y/O Laura Hood and 5 Y/O Joseph Hood.

Angeline mourned the death of Warren Huff for many years before she married Phillip Matthew Turner, Jr., also a Confederate Veteran, on December 23, 1873 in Etowah Co., AL.

The 1880 US Census of Turkeytown, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 44 Y/O Phillip Matthew Turner, Jr., a farmer, and his 37 Y/O wife, Angeline (Hood) Turner. Also living in the household were their children: 5 Y/O William Ayers Turner; 3 Y/O Phillip Stephen Turner and 4 months old Annie Sue Turner. NOTE: Living next door in the 1880 US Census of Turkeytown, Etowah Co., AL was the the household of 78 Y/O Sylla (Pricilla) (Bradley) Turner and her 23 Y/O grandson, John P. Shockley, a farmer. Pricilla was the mother of Phillip Matthew Turner, Jr. Also close-by was the household of 50 Y/O Joseph Berry (Joberry) Turner, another son of Phillip Matthew Turner, Sr. and Pricilla (Bradley) Turner.

Angeline experienced the hardships of a covered-wagon migration as a child, the deprivations and terrors of the Civil War and the rigors of a farm wife and mother in her very long life. My grandmother, Zora Belle (Turner) Chappell, one of her daughters, told me that her mother was extremely hard working and was mostly cheerful.

The 1900 US Census of Turkeytown, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 63 Y/O Phillip Matthew Turner, Jr. and his 57 Y/O wife, Angeline (Hood) Turner. Also living in the household were their children: 20 Y/O Annie Sue Turner, 16 Y/O Zora Belle Turner and a 1 Y/O grandson, John P. Turner.

The 1910 US Census of Coats Bend, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 26 Y/O John Mathis Chappell, a farmer, and his 26 Y/O wife, Zora Belle (Turner) Chappell. Also living in the household were their children: 4 Y/O Velma Kate Chappell, 2 Y/O Elizabeth Sue Chappell and 5 month old Peggy Nell Chappell. Also in the household was 67 Y/O Angeline (Hood) Turner, the mother of John's wife, Zora Belle (Turner) Chappell. NOTE: Living two households away was 35 Y/O Ayers Turner and his 28 Y/O wife, Grace, and their children. Ayers Turner was the brother of Belle (Turner) Chappell and the son of Angeline (Hood) Turner.

The 1930 US Census of Whortons Bend, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 52 Y/O John Webster Thornton, a farmer, and his 49 Y/O wife, Annie Sue (Turner) Thornton. Living in the household were their children: 24 Y/O Joe Graham Thornton and 16 Y/O Willie Sue Thornton. Also living in the household was 88 Y/O Angeline (Hood) Turner, the mother of Annie Sue (Turner) Thornton. NOTE: Living in the adjacent household was 49 Y/O Lonzo Albert Kilgore and his 48 Y/O wife, Anna (Vinyard) Kilgore. Among the five children living in the household was 18 Y/O Lonnie Melvin Kilgore who would marry his next door neighbor, Willie Sue Thornton, on 05 Nov 1933 at Etowah Co., AL.

Angeline lived to be a much beloved lady of 96 years, 5 months and 11 days of age, quite an accomplishment in those days. Among her many other accomplishments besides motherhood, she was noted for her brightly colored bedspreads and beautiful quilts. She spun the thread on her prized spinning wheel and wove it on her loom. The unique magenta, tan and yellow colors she used resulted from the use of berries, bark and other natural coloring agents for making her dyes. Her tatted lace appeared "machine made" and her woven reversible tapestries were exquisite. She was a true accomplished woman of her time, a segment of the strong back-bone of this country.

The children of Phillip Matthew and Angeline (Hood) Turner, Jr. were:
1) William Ayers Turner b. 22 Dec 1874 Coats Bend, Etowah Co., AL, d. 05 Aug 1945 Whorton Bend, Etowah Co., AL, m. 1) Mattie Kate Miller 23 Jan 1898 Etowah Co., AL, 2) Eula Grace Lawrence 1909 AL.
