"Dutch"—as he was known to his family and friends—was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy. He enlisted in 1941, proudly serving 30 years before retiring, and subsequently continued to serve as a civil servant for an additional 16 years. He served onboard the USS Bauer (DD-26) in the WWII Battle of Okinawa as Chief Pharmacist's Mate (CPhM) and onboard the USS Alfred A. Cunningham (DD-752) in the Korean Conflict as Hospital Corpsman-Chief (HMC). Some of his most treasured memories were the times spent with Fleet Marine Forces as a field corpsman.
While serving at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA he met and married Patience Elizabeth Day Weitz on September 16, 1949 and they celebrated 47 years together until her passing in 1996.
He transferred from active duty to the Navy Fleet Reserve in 1961 and honorably retired from Naval Reserve duty in 1971. He continued to serve as a civil servant with the U.S. Army at Walter Reed Medical Center in the Department of Pathology from 1961 to 1987.
