PROCTOR--BLIND AND DEAF, HE WALKS TO HIS DEATH. Eighty-Year-Old G. W. PROCTOR Dies After Being Hit by a Cable Car.

G. W. PROCTOR walked directly in front of an east-bound McAllister-street cable car at the corner of Octavia and McAllister streets yesterday, and died late in the afternoon at the Central Emergency Hospital after an operation had been performed in an effort to save his life.

PROCTOR was four-score years of age, deaf and blind in one eye and although Gripman Patrick CAREY of the car which struck him, did all in his power to attract PROCTOR's attention by ringing the gong, the unfortunate walked straight to his death, unknowing of danger. Policeman HERMENEZ of the Southern Station, who was a passenger on the car in question and witnessed the action, stated that the gripman could not possibly have avoided striking PROCTOR, and while CAREY was locked up on a charge of manslaughter, it is probable that he will be speedily released. CAREY has been railroading for eighteen years, and in all that time has met with no accidents, that of yesterday being his first. He is regarded as a careful and conscientious workman by his superiors. PROCTOR, it is said, has had several narrow escapes from similar accidents."
