Benjamin Brown of Jasper township died on Thursday morning at 2:20, of cancer of the stomach, from which he had been suffering for over a year, and bedfast most of the time for the past nine months. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2:30, at his late residence, conducted by Rev. A. Y. Cupp, assisted by Llewellyn Post, G.A.R. The following old comrades were chosen pall bearers: David Flowers, Charles Malthy, Thomas Kempton, Fred Scafroth, O.R. Cain, John Eldridge. Interment was made in the Brooks Cemetery.
Benjamin L. Brown was born June 23, 1839, in Mercer County, Illinois, and was 73 years, 1 month and 28 days of age. He was married to Miss Helen M. Preston, December 25, 1857, in the state and county of their birth. Thirteen children were born to them, five having preceded the father in death; Melissa died when 2 years of age; Fannie, Celesta and a son, died in infancy and Miss Lizzie, died when 24 years old. The living are Lewis Brown, Mrs. Lydia Cochrane, Harry E. Brown, Charles O. Brown, Mrs. Essie M. Coleman and William H. Brown all residing in Jasper township, Mrs. Laura E. Crisp, residing at Bryant, S. D. and Mrs. Amanda L. Conn of Corning. All were in attendance at the funeral of their father.
Mr. Brown removed to Iowa and the present home on February 25, 1880, where has since been the family residence, except two years that they lived in Brooks. Besides his aged and feeble wife and children, he leaves two brothers and one sister; Hugh Brown of Viola, Mercer County, Illinois; William Brown of Douglas township and Mrs. Ann Williams, residing at Lenox. He enlisted in Co. H, 84th Illinois Inft. and served three years. Two brothers went to the service with him and fought side by side. One was shot through the head in battle, killing him instantly, the other two not being injured.
