DEL KIMBERLING DIES IN TRACTOR ACCIDENT

YOUTH FALLS IN TREAD OF DOZER AT TUTTLE RANCH

Death Pronounced As Almost Instantaneous In Prairie Mishap

Prairie City - This community was shocked and saddened by the tragic death Tuesday morning of Deldon Kimberling, 29, a lifelong resident, who was crushed to death in the tracks of a "cat type" tractor while working at the Tuttle Hereford ranch south of here.

Young Kimberling was operating a tractor in clearing brush from a field, working alone. Officials investigating the accident said that he had apparently attempted to mount the tractor while it was in motion by stepping on the tread. In some manner his foot caught in the track and dragged his body under the hydraulic tank of the dozer blade. They stated death followed in a very few seconds to his badly crushed body, which had wedged against the tractor tread tightly enough to stop the engine and stall the tractor.

Although there were no witnesses to the accident, time of death was placed as between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. It was approximately an hour before the mishap was discovered by Archie Heilmeyer, another ranch employee, who immediately notified county authorities at Canyon City.

Carl Driskill, coroner, Oliver Calhoun, sheriff, E. P. Truesdell, district attorney, and state police officers investigated the accident and assisted in removing the body. Dr. Kubler reported death was caused by crushing of the legs and body.

Mr. Kimberling was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kimberling and a nephew of Ernest Kimberling. Other survivors include a brother, Delbert, of Portland, his wife, Elna and two small sons, Roger and Kenneth. He was born in this community, attended the local schools, and spent one year at the University of Oregon. He was employed as a foreman on the Tuttle ranch at the time of his death.

Funeral services will be held from the Prairie City Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Reverend Wayne Brown of Fossil but formerly of Prairie City will conduct the church service with Masonic rites to be conducted by Prairie City lodge, chapter No. 60 at the graveside in the cemetery.

All Prairie City business houses will be closed during the funeral services.
