Born in Texas to a father (George) who was a well-known Civil War veteran and later, an Indian fighter as a Captain in the army. His father was killed in battle when Eugene was 1 year old. He and his mother Jesse moved to Catskill, NY. He served in the Spanish American War as Company Musician. He worked for the National Biscuit Company in NYC, lived in Patchogue, Long Island, NY and served as Choirmaster and Organist of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bay Shore, Long Island.He went to Boston and later Kingston, NY where he formed a successful financial investment firm.
