The date of death on William Grant's headstone is Mar 26, 1837. This date is incorrect. He actually died on March 26, 1847. His will, dated Jan 23, 1837, was offered for probate April 5, 1847 and the probate records of Carleton County, NB clearly indicate he died the previous month.

Born in what was then the colony of New York, William Grant was one of the the five sons of a Loyalist soldier (first name uncertain) in the King's American Regiment that came to New Brunswick with their widowed Mother Elizabeth in Oct 1783. During that harsh winter one of her sons died and soon after her arrival she married Henry Cronkhite. William's known siblings were Peter Grant (1771-1852), Lawrence Grant (1775- ? ), Finley Grant (c 1776 - ? ), Rev Henry Cronkhite (1785-1847), Abraham Cronkhite (1787-1847), Simon Cronkhite (1792-1837), Jabez Cronkhite(1793-1866)and Ruben Cronkhite (1795-1815).

William married Ann Maidstone Hillman at the Anglican Church in Woodstock, New Brunswick in 1795. They had a large family, some researchers say that there were 23 children born to this couple. The names of 18 of them are known. In addition to the ones linked below there were three other children that are buried in currently unknown locations: Sarah Penelope (1801 - died young), Edmund Tristram Grant (1812-1886) and Henry Grant (1821-1856).
