Samuel H. Courtney, age 87, passed away Tuesday afternoon, February 10, 2009, at his home in Warsaw, Missouri. He was born in Sequoah County, Oklahoma, on March 3, 1921, the son of William Joseph and Lillie Wes Watson Courtney.
He graduated from high school in Vian, Oklahoma. He was then drafted into the United States Army serving overseas in Europe as a veteran of World War II.
He was united in marriage to Kathryn L. Smith in Miami, Oklahoma. They first made their home in Ft. Collins, Colorado, later moving to Stillwater, Oklahoma and then to Springfield, Missouri. Throughout the years Sam worked in the sales and service of typewriters and business machines, opening a distributorship for Royal Typewriter in Springfield.
On May 25, 1965, they moved their family to Warsaw, Missouri, where they owned and operated Courtney's 5 & Dimes store until retiring on April 15, 1987.
Sam was a member of American Legion Post #217 of Warsaw and was a lifetime member of the Missouri Chapter of the Disabled American Veteran. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Warsaw.
He was a member of the Shawnee Masonic Lodge #653 of Warsaw, the York Rite in Springfield and the Warsaw Shrine Club.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of the home, one son, Bobby Courtney, of Bolivar, Missouri, several grand children other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services will be at 1:00 P.M. Saturday afternoon at the Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw with Rev. Sam Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in the Shawnee Cemetery in Warsaw. Visitation will be from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
