"Mrs. Mary McClary Swan, one of the oldest settlers of Mercer county, died at her home in Ravanna, Mar. 20, 1921. She was born in Champaign county, Ohio Nov. 19, 1834, being at the time of her death 86 years, 4 months and 1day old. She was married to Jesse Swan in Bond Co., Illinois in 1851. They came to Mercer county MO and settled on the old home place about 1854. She leaves to mourn her loss six children and a number of grandchildren. The living children are William P. Swan, Geo. W. Swan and James M. Swan of Ravanna. Ellen Spencer of Idaho, Mrs. Arabelle Yates of New Mexico and Henry Swan of Washington. Her husband, Jesse Swan and three sons, John Benjamin and Jesse, preceded her in death. She was a kind and loving mother, never complaining about anything. She had been confined to her bed about three and a half years. She was ready to go and only waiting, saying that she was going to be with Jesus and her loved ones over there. She was a faithful Christian from young girlhood and never complained during all of her illness and suffering. Funeral services were held at the Otterbein church conducted by J.A. Derry of Mercer." Mary McClary, age 16, born Ohio, was listed in the family of David and Margaret Runkle on the 1850 census of Morgan Co., Illinois. David Runkel was aged 35, his wife was aged 33, and they had moved from Ohio about 1848-1849.
