Oldest child of William Hamilton and Kathleen aka Catherine Hawk Hamilton's 11 children.
Jim's middle name was after his paternal Grandfather Joshua Lafayette Hamilton. Jim's middle name Lafayette was commonly mispronounced Laughett.

He was a farmer and the groundskeeper at Gunnings Cemetery. At age 57 he climbed back onto a horse drawn wagon, talking to his son Martin Brady Hamilton, and died unexpectedly of a stroke, laying his head on Brady's shoulder.
