Amos Alonzo BANNIGAN c1863IL-

Amos was one of the Vigilantes along with Joseph MCMILLAN, Jim STEPHENSON & Wm. BUCKNER who on 03JUN1885 with masks and guns, held up and assaulted a Dr. UNDERWOOD on one of his housecalls out of Eldora, IA in Hardin County. Along with others of the Hardin County IA Vigilance Society, their plan was to arouse hatred towards the RAINSBARGER Boys by casting the blame on them. Finley and Emmanuel(Manse) RAINSBARGER were arrested and held at the County Jail in Eldora.

In the early morning hours of 05JUN1885, a Lynch Mob using a battering ram stormed the Hardin County Jail in Eldora, shooting to death Finley and Emmanuel RAINSBARGER – the Sheriff and Deputy had conveniently left town that night. Amos BANNIGAN was probably in the Mob.

Emmanuel RAINSBARGER'S wife(Ethleen SEABURY d/o Jerome) was a cousin to Amos.
