Laura was born to Charley and Nancy Moutardier, the eldest of 11 children. She worked for Dr. Gosnal for 20 years and was known for her handwork. She married Jack Downs, had two children, Verzie and Velzie. She was unhappy, and moved back home with her children. She was later hospitalized for stress and died at 42. Her parents raised the children.
