Inga Jacobine Sorensen was born 19 Dec 1866 in Oslo (at that time known as Christiania), the capital city of Norway. Her parents were Master Shoemaker Hans Jacob Sorensen (age 43) and Juliana Lovise Jonasdatter (age 38). Her older sister, Helga, was 7 and her brother, Emil, was 3 at the time of Inga's birth. Inga was baptized at Oslo Cathedral (Lutheran) on 31 Mar 1867.

Norway was primarily a rural county in the 1860's, and Oslo was the largest population center with about 57,000 inhabitants. The Norwegian parliament building was completed in Oslo in May 1866, just shortly before Inga's birth. During Inga's youth Henrik Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt" with incidental music by Oslo native Edvard Grieg saw it's premiere in Olso in 1876. Also, Edvard Munch, painter of "The Scream" (1893) was born in a small village in Norway in 1863, and moved to Oslo with his family in 1864, where he grew up and trained as an artist.

On 17 Sep 1885, it appears that Inga and her mother (listed as Louise Sorensen) boarded the Danish steamer Geiser, at Christiania, and sailed for New York. Mother and daughter apparently arrived in New York on October 2 or 3, 1885.

The Geiser had her maiden voyage in 1882 and was part of the Thingvalla line, a Danish shipping company. On 14 Aug 1888, the Geiser, on a return trip from New York to Copenhagen, collided in a dense fog with her sister ship, the flagship of the line, the Thingvalla, which was on her way from Christiania to New York. The Thingvalla survived, but the Geiser was lost, along with 105 crew and passengers, a terrible disaster which was widely covered in contemporary news reports.

Following their arrival in New York, presumably Lousie and Inga made their way to Chicago where other family awaited them, probably including Helga.

Inga married John Hodgson on 28 Jul 1886 in Chicago when she was 19 years old. John, a portrait photographer, was 20 years older than Inga. Their first child, Inga Louise Hodgson, was born 6 months later in January 1887, so it is apparent that Inga was expecting at the time of her marriage to John Hodgson. One family story indicates that Inga was raped by an unknown man before her marriage. The details of this story, and what was known by each of Inga and John at the time of their marriage, are unclear.

Inga and John Hodgson went on to have a total of four children in Chicago: Inga Louise (1887), John Gustav (1889), Francis E. (1892) and Ruth Clara (1895).

In 1898, John accepted an invitation to join Frank Rinehart as a photographer at the Transmississippi Exposition in Omaha. John was involved with photographing various members of the Indian Congress that attended the exposition, including many famous Indian chiefs and leaders of that time, such as the famed apache leader, Geronimo. Inga and John moved the family to Omaha, originally living at about 45th and Seward, and finally settling in South Omaha, near 24th & M, where John operated Le Grand Studio, and the family lived in an apartment over the studio. Inga and John had two more children in Omaha: William Henry (1900) and Richard A. (1905).

Inga enjoyed the outdoors and took her family on camping trips to rural Sarpy County. She enjoyed sleigh rides, car rides, boat rides, and spending time with her family.

Inga and John's two oldest children, Inga Louise and John Gustave, married siblings Ray and Mamie Whitaker, and moved to ranches near Scottsbluff, Nebraska. It appears that the family made several visits to the Hodgson/Whitaker families in Scottsbuff, and John Hodgson died in Scottsbluff in 1920 at the age of 73.

Inga returned to Omaha where she lived until her death on 18 Aug 1934 at age 67. At the time of her death, she had 6 children, all living and married, and 10 grandchildren. her children were:

1. Inga L. Hodgson (1887-73), married Ray Sterling Whitaker

2. John Gustav Hodgson (1889-1956), married Mamie Esther Whitaker

3. Frances E. Hodgson (1892-1963), married Allen E. Jones

4. Ruth Clara Hodgson (1895-1980), married Ernest C. Harvey

5. William Henry Hodgson (1900-1966), married Saphrona Anderson

6. Richard A. Hodgson (1905-1993), married (1) Diantha Faulkner, (2) Mary Todd Bailey
