Charles Clinton Gates died of emphysema and diverticulitis Friday in an Oregon City care center. He was 74.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Cemetery.

Mr. Gates was born June 21, 1919, in Oregon City. From 1942 to 1960, he owned the Grand Fish Co. in Portland. A custodian at Clackamas Community College for 15 years, he retired in 1983.

He was a member of the Oregon City Elks Lodge. For many years he played and coached softball in the Oregon City area.

His first wife, Jeanne, died in 1964. He married Eleanor Overturf in 1974.

Survivors besides his wife include son, Mike of Oregon City; daughter, Sharlee Stone of Oregon City; stepsons, Gary Overturf and William Overturf, both of Medford; stepdaughters, Phyllis Rouhier of Medford and Donna Haas of Oakldale, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests rememberances be contributions to the American Lung Association.
