Ella was one of four children born to Isaac Broshears and Hannah Voyles. She was raised in Warrick County, with her sister Effie May, and brothers Sylvester and Joseph. She married John W. Palmer on November 30, 1905. In addition to raising six children of their own, they also took in Ella's niece and two nephews, after the death of her sister Effie May Broshears Lynch.
She worked as a restaurant cook for a number of years, and was a member of the New Bethel Church and the VFW No. 1114 Auxiliary.
Her husband and two daughters preceeded her in death. She was survived by four sons, nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Services were held at Pierre Funeral Home, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
