Mr. Merello was born at St. Louis May 22, 1924, the son of Joseph Bartholomew Merello and his wife Irene, nee Reese.
May 29, 1948, he was united in marriage to Doris LaVerne Ochterbeck.
He was of the Catholic faith and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Luebbering.
Mr. Merello was proud to have served his country as a private in the U.S. Army during WWII entering May 22, 1944, and receiving an honorable discharge March 31, 1945.
He received a master's degree in music from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Ill.
He had been employed by the Ritenour School District, Overland, as the orchestra and band teacher. During the summer months, he played for the Muny Opera Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony.
When he retired, Mr. Merello and his wife relocated to a farm in the St. Clair area.
He became an active member of the St. Clair Kiwanis, serving as a president and on various committees.
He was a bus driver for the R-13 School District and a truck driver for Happy Apple Co., Washington.
Mr. Merello was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mary Lou Mecker.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Thomas Merello and wife Brenda, Ironton, Gary Merello and wife Laura, St.
Charles, and Dennis Merello and wife Mary, St. Louis; three daughters, Judith Lewis and husband Arthur, St. Charles,
Sandra Hausman and husband Timothy, St. Louis, and Penny Tredway and husband William, Imperial; one brother,
Joseph Merello and wife Agnes, Shreveport, La.; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; other relatives and many friends.
A funeral mass was held Thursday, Jan. 9, at St. Francis of Assisi Church,Luebbering,with Fr. John McEntee officiating.
Memorials to the St. John's Mercy Hospital Patients Memorial Fund are preferred.
The Merello family was served by Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair.
