In February 1923 He was appointed Special Agent in charge of the Sioux Falls South Dakota office. In December 1926 he was transferred to be Special Agent in Charge of the Minneapolis Minnesota office. He served in Minnesota during the height of the gangster era. Agent Hanni arrived at the end of the ill fated Little Bohemia raid near Manitowish Wisconsin in March 1934. He sent a memo to Director J, Edgar Hoover critical of the raids mistakes that killed a innocent citizen, left an agent dead and allowed the John Dillinger gang to escape. As the Agents he was critical of, Melvin Purvis and William Rorer, were favorites of Director Hoover. Werner Hanni found himself transferred to the Omaha Nebraska office. In 1935 He was transferred to the Aberdeen South Dakota Office, where a new agent said in a oral history Hanni knew every policeman in North and South Dakota. In 1953 Agent Hanni was transferred to the Kansas City Missouri office. He retired in 1954.
On February 15 1956 while on vacation in Saint Petersburg Florida he suffered a fatal heart attack.
