When Mary Lovinia Noble was 16, she boarded the one of he first Erie Canal boats to go all the way to Buffalo with her family.
Thy traveled to Lake Erie, where they boarded another boat bound for Detroit. There her father, Jeremiah took off on horseback for the Milwaukee trading post in Wisconsin. His wife, Amanda (Wilcox) Noble, & children boarded a third ship which took them to Milwaukee by water, all around the State of Michigan.
Jeremiah set up shop in Milwaukee. Mary helped in the store & met William Birge there. They moved out to the frontier & built a cabin where their first son Julius was born, the first European child ever born in what was to become Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Mary later moved to St. Louis, Missouri with her son, who returned her to Whitewater to rest beside her husband in death.
