"Death Summons Mark P. Furnas.

Letts Resident for Past 51 Years Dies at Age of 82.

(Journal News Service) Letts. Mark P[atty] Furnas, 82, a resident of Letts for 51 years, died at his home here Sunday morning. He had been in failing health for five years and seriously ill for a week.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Methodist church at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday by the Rev. J. W. Gruber.

Mark Patty Furnas was born Dec. 22, 1850, at Piqua, Ohio, the son of Wilkinson and Maria Furnas. The family came to Iowa when he was a year and a half old and for many years lived on a farm south of Letts.

He was married to Ella Curtis [nee Rhoda Ellen Curtis] Jan. 1, 1874. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary early this year. Mr. Furnas had nine brothers and sisters, three of whom survive. Will Furnas and Mrs. Sarah Eliason of Letts and Mrs. Isabella Judd of California. He is also survived by his three children, Mrs. Etta Garrett of Muscatine, Frank Furnas of Joliet, Ill., and Mrs. Peardl Ross of Letts, by four grandchildren and one great grandchild." END

"Furnas Funeral Held at Letts.

Services at Methodist Church Tuesday Afternoon Largely Attended.

Letts. Many friends and relatives attended the funeral services for Mark Petty [Patty?] Furnas at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. J .W. Gruber was in charge of the service. L. E. Parsons sang "Rock of Ages" and "I Shall Not be Moved." He was accompanied by Miss Amy Paine at the piano. Mrs. T. L. Eland, Mrs. Roy Pain and Mrs. M. A. Shellabarger took charge of the flowers. The pallbearers were J. T. Paullins, M. A. Shellabarger, Robert Elliott, E. S. Rabe, Dr. T. L. Eland, and L. U. Gipple.

Those attending from a distance were [long list of names I did not transcribe]."
