Christian was the son of J. Georg and Salome Hartzog. He married Katherine Lindemoot and Elizabeth Dague King.

Christian and Katherine were the parents of Susannah Harner, Joshua Hartzog, Hannah Harner, Sarah Blossom, Benjamin F. Hartzog, Caroline Hartzog and Jonathan. Christian and Elizabeth were the parents of William Hartzog, Zachary T. Hartzog, and Harriet "Hattie" King.

Christian came to Blackcreek Township, Mercer Co., Ohio in 1840 with his parents. He was a prominant farmer in the Blackcreek area and in Willshire, Van Wert County. Christian died of palsy.
