Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals or the District of Columbia. He best known for promoting racial desegregation of public schools and public transportation in his hometown of New Orleans. As a result he and his family lost many friends and had threats made against their lives. By the 1950's and 1960's because of his actions integration began not only in public schools in New Orleans but also throughout universities, buses, parks, sporting events and voting lists. In 1962 President John F Kennedy appointed him to the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals. where he continued to help protect the rights of African Americans. He died of complications from prostate cancer at his home in Westmoreland Hills, Maryland.
