Francis Marion Whelchel 1838-1916
Francis Marion Whelchel (1838-1916) was a son of Mary (nee Irwin) and Davis Whelchel (Jr.), however, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Jemima (nee Whelchel) and Abraham "Abner" Helms. His mother Mary died c.1839 when Francis was only about a year old. He was taken in by his aunt and uncle while still a child. Jemima (nee Whelchel) Helms was a daughter of Nancy (nee Barnes) and Davis Whelchel (Sr).

Although the father of Francis Marion Whelchel is shown at Find A Grave as Davis "Leander" Whelchel, there is absolutely no evidence that his father had a middle name.
