Isaac Brokaw was born Oct 26, 1723 near Somerville, New Jersey, was baptised in the New York Dutch Church Apr 26, 1724, and died Jul 7, 1789 in Somerset County, New Jersey at the age of 65.

His first wife was Antie Van Nostrand, whom he married in New Jersey on May 31,1746. She was baptised May 18, 1727 and died before 1758, less than 31 years of age. She was the daughter of Casparas Van Nostrand and Jannetie Christoffelse Stymets.

His second wife was Catherine Van Wagenen, whom he married on Mar 7, 1758.

In his will written two months before he died, he wrote:

"In the name of God Amen. the Eleventh day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Eighty Nine. I Isaac Brokaw of the Eastern Precinct of the County of Somerset and State of New Jersey. being at this time Sick and weak in Body but of Sound and perfect mind and memory. thanks be given unto Almighty God.

"knowing it is appointed for all men once to Dye. Do make and ordain this my last will & Testament (that is to Say)

"first of all I Recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it. and my Body to the Earth to be Buryed in a Christian like and Decent manner. at the Desension of my Executors hereafter Named. and as to Such worldly Estate wherewith it hath been Pleased God to bless me with in this life I give Devise and Dispose of the Same in the following manner and form.

"first I give and Bequeath to my beloved wife Catherine all her wearing apperal, one bedsted beding and bed cloths properly belonging to one bed, also one of my best cows, and the use of one of my best Negro wenches, the the Easterly Room in my Dwelling house, and her Board for two years after my Decease at the Expense of my Son Bergun. and after two years is Expired after my Decease, then She is to Receive Twelve Pounds per annum and her Board and firewood to Support one fire in her room to be paid by my five sons by name Caspares. John. Isaac. Abraham & Bergon Each Share alike. During the Remains my widow and no longer.

"Item I give my Son Bergun the use of all of my Plantation whereon I now live with all my Stock and farmer Utensils Negroes and household furniture During the term after my Decease. Provided he is to pay the Sum of fifty two pounds with the Interest, on a mortgage I owe in the Loan Office of Somerset County, for the use thereof, and to Board My Daughter Phebe and my grand daughter Jane & the Said Term of two years.

"Item I give and Bequeath all my Plantation whereon I now live with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging unto my five Sons Caspares. John, Isaac. Abraham & Bergun to be Equally Divided between them Each share alike in Quantity and Quality two years after my decease, to them their heirs & assigns forever. Provided they and each of them when they come to the age of Twenty one years by my five Sons before mentioned Each share alike.

"Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter Jenney the Sum of Sixty pounds, and to my Daughter Anne the Sum of Sixty three pounds, and to my Daughter Phebe the Sum of Seventy Pounds Lawful money of the state aforesaid to be paid to them and each of them by my five Sons before mentioned. Each share alike two years after my Decease.

"Item it is my will further that all my Just Debts and funeral Charges (Except what is before ordered to be paid by my Son Bergun) to be paid out of my moveable Estate, and all the Residue and Remainder of my Persoanl or moveable Estate after the Said Debts are paid, is to be Euqally Divided between all my Sons and Daughters before mentioned and the Children of my Daughter Sarah, Each Share alike, that is, the Children of my Daughter Sarah to have one Share Equal with one of the others, and their share to be Equally Divided between them Share alike.

"Lastly I do nominate and appoint my Son Caspares. my Son John. my Son Isaac. my Son Abraham and my Son Bergon. with my Cousin Abraham Staats to be my Executors of this my last will and Testament. and I do hereby Revoke Disanull all Former wills by me made and Proclaim and allow this and no other to be my Last will and Testament.

"In witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal the day and year first above Written. (signed) Isaac Brokaw"

Witnesses to the will were William McDuffie, Simeon van Noortwyck, and Nelly Cosort. The men signed their names; Nelly made an x. Comparing signatures, this Simeon van Noortwyck was Maria Stryker's grandfather. Maria Stryker married Abraham C. Brokaw, Isaac Brokaw's grandson.

The will is on file recorded as 840R, Book 31, p. 398, Somerset County, New Jersey, in the Archives and History Bureau, New Jersey State Library. The will was proved on Aug 31, 1789.

He was buried in Franklin Township, Somerset County, New Jersey.
