Her parents were Christian Ebersole and Mary "Polly" Galloway. When Nancy was 15, she was seduced by a boarder living in her home, and she got pregnant. He offered to marry her later on, but her brothers "ran him off with a shotgun." She gave birth to the child, a daughter named Gertrude, who was known as "Gertie." Nancy's parents and her brothers loved Gertie and treated her like she was their daughter and sister. But six years later, Nancy died, from the emotional stress. Gertie was raised by her uncles and aunts in Iowa, and she later married John Schoolcraft.
