We don't know a whole lot about William. The 1860 census in Butler County gives his birth about 1836 in Alabama. He married Margaret Melvina Pickett Aug 11 1858 in Butler County. He enlisted Jul 19, 1861 in the 13th Alabama Infantry Co G. He was promoted to Corporal. At the end of 1864, he transferred to Gracie's Brigade. He was captured at Hatcher's Run, Virginia on March 25, 1864 and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland. He was released from there June 10, 1865. The information passed down through the family is that he was ill upon his return home and died within weeks. I have spent a year trying to locate his grave with no success. This memorial will honor this man who like so many others in that era died far too young. He left behind his wife and a daughter, Mary Adelia Caldwell. It has been well over a century since his death and his descendants, who number in the hundreds, remember and honor him.
