James Clifford Miller of John Day died Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, at Blue Mountain Hospital. He was 80.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 19, 2007, at Depot Park in Prairie City. A potluck reception will follow.

Mr. Miller was born July 3, 1927, in Denver, Colo., to Robert and Eva (Bain) Miller. He graduated high school in 1946 in Worley, Idaho and attended college in Coeur d'Alene. He served in the Marines from 1946 to 1948. He married Kathryn Swearingen on May 24, 1952, in Prairie City.

Mr. Miller and the Miller Logging Company were recognized by Oregon State Forestry in 1986 for doing "above and beyond" what is expected of logging companies on logging sites. The Millers logged about 1.25 million board feet of timber between December of 1985 and May of 1986. Mr. Miller retired from logging in 1991.

He enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, fishing, motorcycling, mushroom and berry picking and woodworking.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of John Day; son, Neal, of Canyon City; son, Chris, of Prineville; daughter, Cathy Mueller, of Tecumseh, Mich.; son, Marty, of Klamath Falls; sister, Audrey Jackson, of Worley, Idaho; sister, Shirley Stahoski, of Grass Valley, Calif.; sister, Dixie Novak, of Davenport, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
