There is a family "legend" that states that Paul, after going AWOL & escaping from the Prussian Army, "acquired" a boat of some sort and brought many people with him on the trip. According to the story, half the people died and had to be thrown overboard.
Paul had a half-brother, Martin SEMROW who lived in Newton, Marquette County, Wisconsin. Two sisters Caroline (Semerau) Karau and Susanne (Semerau) RINGHANDT in Pine River, Lincoln County, Wisconsin. An older full-sister, Rosin (Semerau) Ristow was the first of the Semerau family to arrive in America in 1858.
Also a cousin Gottlieb SEMRAU (no E) also in Pine River, Wisconsin. Another cousin August W. F. SEMRAU (no E) in Winnebago, County, Wisconsin. Also a nephew John A. SEMRO in Washington State and one more nephew, Friedrich "Fred" SEMERAU who immigrated and lived Holyoke, Carlton County, Minnesota.
Of all these relatives who came to America, only one nephew retained the correct & original surname spelling of "SEMERAU".

Paul Semerau Passed Away
Paul Semrau, aged 85 years, a widower residing wiht his son August in the town of Stettin died Saturday afternoon, June 9th, and was buried Tuesday afternoon from the Utrinity Lutheran Church in Stettin. Mr. Semrau was an old resident of Stettin, having resided there for 63 years. He survived by three sons and two daughters, his wife preceding him in death several years ago. He had retired from active farming operations for some time.
