Born: Henrich Julius Hansen
Son of Hans Hansen & Anne Mathea Knudsen

Henry Brown's middle initial "H" was believed to stand for his real surname "Hansen" as a way to let his descendants known his real origin. It is believed that he changed his name from Henrich Julius Hansen to Henry H Brown upon coming to America (New York) at the age of 16 (ca 1844). The spelling of his first name "Henrich" is the way it is spelled in the documents sent from Oslo, Norway.

He served as a volunteer in the US War with Mexico in the late 1840's under the name of Henry Brown, and later served in the American Civil War under the command of Admiral Farragut and Admiral Porter. During the American Civil War, Henry Brown is listed as "Acting Master" in April 1862 during the bombardment of Fort Jackson, Louisiana, on the Mortar Schooner USS John Griffith. He is also listed as having served aboard the USS Dumbarton on 13 August 1864 in command as "Acting Master Volunteer LT." and on 01 January 1865 as "Acting Volunteer Lt."

Date of American Naturalization was 14 September 1858 as recorded in the court of common pleas court, NY County, bundle No. 205, Record No. 237. His address at that time was 59 West St., NYC

Henry Brown was the inventor of the Bell Buoy, known as "Brown's Bell Buoy"

After the war (Civil War), in 1869 he was assigned, by the Lighthouse Department, to command the buoy tender, USS Alanthus at Charleston, SC. It was during this time on 15 December 1874 that he patented his bell buoy. In 1881, the USS Alanthus (sometimes spelled as "Ilanthus" ) was condemned and a new ship, the USS Wisteria, was put into service. It was then he took command of the new buoy tender, the USS Wisteria, also stationed at Charleston, SC. After a long command of the USS Wisteria, just before his death, The government transferred command of the Wisteria to a younger man, and appointed Captain Brown as "Inspector of Buoys" as a mark of appreciation for a long and distinguished service.

Oral Family stories indicate that Captain Henry Brown was so sensitive to sound that he had to wrap up his pocket watch in a towel and bury it under his pillow so he would not hear it ticking and keep him awake. At his burial, his second wife purchased a pad to place on top of the casket so he would not heard the dirt as the grave was filled in. This pad cost $6.00. (McAlister Funeral Home, Charleston, SC)
