Obituary:

Pomp Lee Berger, 87, of Gretna, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009. Born March 25, 1921, in the Greenfield Community of Pittsylvania County, son of the late Jake Berger and Effie Reynolds Berger.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carrie Mobley Berger; his brother, Jacob R. Berger, of Pineville, NC; and his sister, Nancy Berger Lynch of Allen, Texas. He is also survived by his children, Martha Berger Varzaly and her husband Steve, of Overland Park, Kansas; Glenn Lee Berger and his wife Debbie, of Altavista; and Jean Berger Estes and her husband Rob, of Richmond. His grandchildren are Carrie Grosdidier and her husband Bill, of Olathe Kansas; Brent Varzaly and his wife Catalina, of Shawnee, Kansas; Jake Berger of Richmond; Andy Berger of Gretna; Ashley Jones, and her husband Rob, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Micah Geyer of Lynchburg; Carrie Johnstone and her husband Tommy, of Richmond; and Webb Estes of Richmond. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Minnie Adams of Gretna.
Pomp graduated from Gretna High School in 1938 and Virginia Tech in 1942 with a degree in Agronomy. He served his country during World War II as an artillary officer in Patton's army. Pomp was a rural letter carrier in the Gretna area for almost 40 years. He was a charter member of the Gretna Rescue Squad, served on the Gretna Planning Commission for many years, and was a member of the American Legion. He was an active beef cattle farmer all his life, belonging to the Pittsylvania County Farm Bureau, as well as to several cattlemen's associations. He attended the First Baptist Church of Gretna. First and foremost, Pomp loved his wife, Carrie, and his family. He enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and around the world, telling stories to his grandchildren, and making friends with everyone he met. He was a lifelong student and always found the best in others.
Visitation will be held at Colbert Moran Funeral Home in Gretna, from 7:00 p. m. to 8:30 p. m. on Saturday, and the funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church of Gretna at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009 by Rev. Roy Ford. There will be a private burial at the family cemetery prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation of www.alzinfo.org.
