BLACKSHEAR ‹ Ivory Janelle Hickox, 56, died Thursday morning (May 11, 2006) at the Waycross Health and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness.

A native of Pierce County, she had lived in Warner Robins for several years before moving back to Pierce County in the late 1970s. She was a para-professional for Concerted Services, which showed her love for children and was also a former guard for the Ware State Prison.

She was a member of the Blackshear Presbyterian Church and was a daughter of the late Hubert William Sloan Sr. and Rena Faye Courson Proctor. Her husband, Barry Hickox; one brother, Elbert Sloan and her stepfather, Dudley Proctor, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Hickox of Blackshear and Mark Hickox of Scofield Barracks, Hi.; one sister, Connie Simmons of Waycross; five brothers, Jerry (Susan) Sloan, of Blackshear, Jimmy (Marian) Sloan of Hartsville, S.C., Robert (Glenda) Griffin of Douglas, and Tony (Michelle) Griffin and Hubert Sloan Jr.. all of Blackshear; her step-mother, Leona Sloan of Blackshear; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral will be held Saturday morning at 11 at the Blackshear Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Hoboken Cemetery. Visitation will be held tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Blackshear Presbyterian Child Care Center, P.O. Box 607, Blackshear, Ga. 31516. The body will lay in state at the church one hour prior to the service.
