Emma J. Teel was raised in Georgia. She met and had married Richard Teel by 1870. They had their first child, Bonny, that year, and by 1880 Emma and Richard had three more children--John, Ozella, and "Baby" Teel. A daughter, Docia, was born in 1877. By 1900, they had three younger children living at home--twins Jessie & Willie and Milton.

In the 1870s and 1880s, the Teels lived in Hatcher Station, Quitman Co., GA, but by 1900 they had moved to Noble Township, Cleveland Co., OK. Richard was a farmer as were members of his family living nearby in Hatcher Station. Emma grew up in Georgia, but Richard's family came from North Carolina. By 1920, Richard had retired from farming. He and Emma continued to be surrounded by family.
