Andrew Nussbaum, Remington Hatchery Founder, Dies
Andrew Nussbaum of Remington, who pioneered the poultry industry in Remington and eventually established the widely known Fairview Hatcheries, Inc., which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, died in Home Hospital in Lafayette at 10:05 p.m. Monday following a lingering illness. He was 81 years old.
Mr. Nussbaum was born in Fairbury, Illinois, April 22, 1885, and had lived in the Remington community since 1900. At an early age began the poultry career that was to gain prominence throughout northwest Indiana. He was married to Miss Emma Troxell in 1911. She died in 1918. In 1933 he was married to Marie Bahler, who passes away in 1958.
Mr. Nussbaum was a member of Apostolic Christian Church of south of Remington. Hew was granted a life membership in the State Poultry Association in 1956.
Mr. Nussbaum had been in semi-business retirement in recent years. The Hatchery is now operated by three of his sons.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Esther Woodruff of Remington; four sons, Edward, Marvin and Robert Nussbaum of Remington and Jack Nussbaum of Frankfort; thirteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; six sisters and two brothers, Miss Ida Nussaum, Mrs. Cynthia Baier, and Mrs. Eunice Knochel of Remington, Mrs. Martha Farney of Cissna Park, Illinois, Mrs. Clara Woodruff of Lafayette, Mrs. Ruth Gay of Homewood, Illinois, Arthur Nussbaum of Remington and Jesse Nussbauma of Wakarusa.
The funeral services will be held from Apostolic Christian church at 1 p.m. Daylight Saving Time, Thursday. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The remains will lie in state for one hour preceding the services.
Friends may call at Stitz Funeral Home in Remington after noon Wednesday.
