Hazel Bernice Bennett Berry died Jan. 8, 2006, in Eugene of age-related causes. She was 91.
Hazel was born July 24, 1914, in Entiat, Wash. to Marion Allen Bennett and Lenora Blanche (McNicholl) Bennett. Mrs. Berry lived in Grant County most of her life. She married James Boyd Berry on Jan. 25, 1935, in John Day. They bought a cattle and sheep ranch on what is now known as Berry Ranch Lane in 1944. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1985.
Mrs. Berry was a member of the First Baptist Church in John Day, where she taught Sunday school, served as secretary, was on the sunshine committee and sang in the choir. She played the harmonica in church, nursing homes, funerals and as part of a dance band when she lived in Susanville. She also worked in the kitchen at the Blue Mountain Hospital.
Mrs. Berry loved the Lord, spending time with her family, spending time in the outdoors, deer hunting and playing her harmonica.
She is survived by daughter, Kathleen Butler, of Eugene; grandson, Jeremy Franklin, of Seattle; granddaughter, Jennifer Franklin, of Eugene; great-grandsons Brandon Lee Swihart and James Boyd Swihart of Eugene; grandson-in-law, Darren Swihart, of Eugene; two sons-in-law, Jeff Franklin of Junction City and Padraic Butler of Eugene; brothers, Charlie Oliver, of John Day and Norman Oliver of Burns; several nieces and nephews; and by her faithful dog, King.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Blanche and Pearl; and three brothers, Willard, Frankie and Bob.
Special memorial services and celebration of life are scheduled for the second weekend of August, 2006, at Kathy Butler's home in Eugene. Driskill Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. (Blue Mountain Eagle newspaper, John Day, Oregon)
