July of 1942, Emerson was inducted into the U.S. Army where he proudly served his country during World War II as a flight instructor until September of 1944.
Emerson owned and operated Emerson's General Store in Big Bay for many years. He also owned and managed Lumberjack Tavern, a gas station and a restaurant.
He attended both St. Peter's Cathedral in Marquette and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Big Bay.
Member of the Marquette Golf Club as well as the Riverview Country Club in Brownsville, Texas.
