"The LaFayette Sun" - July 26, 1916:

In Memory of Mrs. W. H. Hawkins.

In much sorrow I desire to pen a few words to the memory of my dear, sweet mother, who was delivered from her painful suffering and all the cares of life on July 12th, 1916. Realizing that she is easy and at rest and that God doeth nothing wrong, it consoles my poor, aching heart, but oh, to think her voice is hushed, her place is vacant in papa's home, her body laid low in the cold clay. How can I bear the grief? Though I weep not as one who has no hope, because I feel assured mama has landed on that blessed shore where sorrow never comes. I want to go there.

– Mattie.
